Cowen is forced to put him out of his hopeless agony 网友精彩影评; 美莱村屠杀（My Lai massacre，越南语：Thảm sát Mỹ Lai），是越战期间美军老虎部队由于怀疑村民掩护越共逃亡，于1968年3月16日在越南广南省的美莱村（My Lai）进行屠杀。男女老幼都被枪杀，亦有女性被轮奸和尸体被肢解。隔天美国陆军部的官方报纸《星条旗报》（Stars and Stripes）头条新闻登出：“美军包围赤色分子，杀死128人”。 　　 　　有美军侦察直升机目击屠杀经过。机师休斯·汤普森（Hugh Thompson Jr.）发现美莱村血流成河，于是降落查看。直升机于一条壕沟旁降落，汤普森发现整条壕沟都是尸体和伤者。汤普森请一名陆军中士大卫·米契尔（David Mitchell）帮忙把伤者从壕沟抬出，米契尔却表示会帮伤者解脱。汤普森感到震惊，并向中尉威廉·卡利（William Calley）查询。卡利表示只是跟从指令。汤普森驾走直升机时，见到有美军向壕沟开枪。其后，在上空，汤普森见有美军正向平民靠近。汤普森连忙降落并指示机员，如果美军向平民开火，他们就要向美军开火。汤普森则把平民分两批用直升机载走。 　　 　　美莱村屠杀的消息被美国陆军封锁了一年，后来由美国记者西摩·赫希（Seymont Hersh）所揭发，1969年11月12日《纽约客》（New Yorker）杂志刊出屠杀新闻，导致美国境内反战情绪高涨，国际社会哗然，一致以“道德破产”加以责难。赫希于1970年获得普利策国际报道奖。 　　 　　1969年美国国会对事件展开调查。汤普森作证时被国会议员猛烈抨击。国会主席李华斯（L. Mendel Rivers）更表示汤普森应是唯一受罚的美军，因为他下令向美军瞄准。 　　 　　1971年3月31日美国军事法庭因美国陆军中尉威廉·卡利下令开火而判处终身监禁，然而经上诉后被减刑至四个半月。另有二十五人被起诉，但全部无罪释放。 　　 　　2009年8月19日，威廉·卡利在佐治亚州哥伦布同济会（Kiwanis Club）一次会员聚会中表示自己对屠杀感到悔疚。他说：“我生命中没有任何一天不为那天发生在美莱村的事情而悔恨自责。我愧对那些被杀的人、愧对他们的家人，也愧对卷入本案的美军士兵和他们的家人。我很遗憾
